VR Firefighter forensics project

3D Modelling – Texturing – VR intergration

In this VR project me and my colleague Amadeo Meure were tasked with recreating a shipping container that is filled with furniture and then intentionally burned down. The point of this project was for firefighting students to look at the burned down environment and deduce the cause of the fire, so the main focus of this project is textures

3D modelling

  • Constructed all major scene elements — walls, furniture, structural details — using reference imagery for consistent scale and accuracy.
  • Optimised geometric detail for VR playback while retaining recognisable real-world characteristics.
  • Maintained clean mesh topology and UV layouts to ensure efficient texture mapping and shading.

Texturing

  • Created a custom library of floor and burn textures to differentiate pre- and post-fire surface conditions.
  • Developed multiple texture sets (e.g., wall soot, burnt wood, furniture fabric) to support visual cues for forensic deduction.
  • Balanced continuity and contrast in material work to make fire damage readable and believable in VR

VR Integration

  • Imported and optimised models inside a VR engine to deliver smooth performance in immersive environments.
  • Configured interactive elements to allow users to inspect details up close, simulating real-world evidence analysis.
  • Adjusted lighting and spatial audio for a more cohesive sense of presence during forensic walkthroughs
